A retaining wall is a drainage project wearing a stone jacket. Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in Oakland?
Walls over 4 feet tall (measured from the bottom of the footing) require an engineered design and a City of Oakland permit. Under 4 feet generally doesn't — but drainage still decides whether the wall lasts. We handle permits and engineering when they're required.
How much does a retaining wall cost?
Plan on $70–$120 per square foot of wall face for engineered block with proper drainage — a 40-foot wall at 5 feet tall typically runs $14,000–$24,000. Timber costs less; natural stone costs more. Access and height drive the range.
My old wall is leaning. Repair or replace?
A lean almost always means failed drainage behind the wall, and patching the face doesn't fix the water. We'll tell you honestly which it is — some walls can be rebuilt reusing material, which saves real money.
Can a wall add usable space, not just hold dirt?
That's the best reason to build one. Terracing a slope with two or three shorter walls creates flat zones for a patio, lawn, or vegetable beds — and shorter walls often avoid the permit threshold entirely.
